9 Benue Communities Submerged By Flood
Over 2,000 houses, roads and public offices in Makurdi, the Benue State capital have been submerged following a heavy downpour in the early hours of yesterday that lasted for over 6 hours.
LEADERSHIP correspondent, who went round town to monitor the situation, discovered that the mostly affected areas include; Gyado villa, settlement behind Benue state Civil service Commission, BNARDA and the entire Wurukum market, Idye village, and Ishaya Bakut road settlement.
A major road culvate linking new Kanshio layout was cut off, ongoing construction road at welfare quarters extension, behind Wadata rice mill, Achusa Media village, Agber village settlement and the entire Radio Benue transmitter and newsroom premises were also submerged.
Some of the traders at Wurukum market, who were seen scooping water from their shops said their belongings were submerged in the flood, “We have lost all that we have laboured for,the flood have destroyed all our belongings. All our goods in the shops have submerged and we are appealing to both the state and federal government to come to our aid.”
Other residents who were also seen scooping water out of their room described the flood as devastating as all their belongings were gone with the flood .
Commenting,the commissioner for water Resources and Environment ,Dr Terlumun Utsev, who was on assessment tour with the commissioner of Lands and Survey Bernard Unenger and the Executive secretary Benue state Emergency management Agency,Boniface Ortese described the flood as shocking .
“ The flood is disastrous and it scope is beyond the state government, so we are appealing to the federal government to as a matter of urgency release the ecological fund to the state to enable it tackle the challenge of drainages which is the major cause of flooding in the state,” he said.
