Chelsea fans think they know the real reason Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected them
After Arsenal and Chelsea agreed a £35 million deal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the midfielder looked set to move from north London to west London.
However, just when many Gooners were celebrating selling a player that divides opinion at the Emirates, he surprisingly rejected a contract at the Premier League champions.
Reports suggest that he’s opted against a move to Stamford Bridge because of his reluctance to play wing-back and his desire to play under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
And the Reds have made the next move, tabling a £30 million bid for the England international - only to see it instantly rejected.
But Chelsea fans are still scratching their heads wondering why Oxlade-Chamberlain would reject them when he is seemingly so keen to leave Arsenal. And rather than it being down to not willing to play wing-back, supporters have come up with their own conclusion.
Yesterday, the Telegraph produced a report that revealed Chelsea had told Oxlade-Chamberlain that he can become a winner at the club - just like Gary Cahill. Cahill joined from Bolton in 2012 and forced his way into the Chelsea first-team and has gone onto become club captain.
But Chelsea feels that using the centre-back may not have actually convinced him to join the club. Instead, supporters believe it may have made him reconsider his options.
Whether or not Liverpool will now up their bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain remains to be seen but it seems they will need to improve on their £30 million offer to sign the 24-year-old.
If Liverpool decide not to submit a second bid for him, it leaves the former Southampton player in a difficult situation.
Does he go back to Chelsea and decide to accept their offer? Or does he decide to stay at Arsenal with his tail between his legs with the fear of a backlash from Arsenal fans?
It’s going to be an interesting couple of days
